  • Weed is an unwanted & undesirable plant that affects crop production both in quantity or quality by interference.
  • Interference: Allelopathy & Crop–Weed competition. Term given by – Harper.
  • Pest: Any living organism that causes economic damage.
  • Pesticide: Herbicides, Fungicide, Rodenticide, Nematicide.

General Yield Losses:

  • Weed – 33%
  • Insect – 26%
  • Disease – 20%
  • Other – 21%

Chemical Use Order:

  • World: Herbicides > Insecticide > Fungicide
  • India: Insecticide > Herbicide > Fungicide

Pesticide Use:

  • Maximum pesticide consuming crop – Rice
  • Maximum herbicide consuming crop – Tea, Soybean
  • Maximum pesticide consumption in world – Japan (10–12 kg/ha)

In India Maximum Pesticide Consumption:

  • Pondicherry (Overall)
  • Maharashtra (State-wise)
  • Punjab (Per ha)
  • Average pesticide consumption in India – 600 g/ha
